In Part 2 of a series of interviews about the new lineup for 2018, Adolfo Cambiaso tells why he asked his longtime rival and fellow 10-goaler Facundo Pieres to become his teammate on Valiente. Next week in Part 3, patron Bob Jornayvaz shares his insights on some less obvious but equally important effects the Pieres-Cambiaso alliance may have on the future of the sport.
WHAT WENT INTO YOUR DECISION TO INVITE FACUNDO TO JOIN VALIENTE?
AC: I always choose teams to win; I have done that all my life. I talked to Bob [Jornayvaz] about who the best 10-goalers available were. I invited Pablo MacDonough first, but he couldn't accept because he had a deal in Dubai. Then when I found out that Facundo could be an option, I called him. I thought he was the best choice. It was kind of a surprise to him, but then I want to win. I always want Valiente to be in the top. Valiente is part of my organization, so I try always to make the best teams I can. I thought, “If Facundo is able to come to Valiente, why not?”
DESCRIBE YOUR RELATIONSHIP WITH FACUNDO AND HOW IT WILL WORK.
We play for Argentina together, and we play against each other a lot. We are not friends but we know each other, and we are professional. I was a good friend of his father's, so he knows me very well and I know all his family. It will be a good experience for him and for me, too, to play together with Bob.
WHICH POSITIONS WILL YOU AND FACUNDO PLAY?
Probably I will play at the back and he will go forward, but let’s see. I think we are going to have Tommy Beresford, too. Tommy and Bob are hard workers, and they're going to make a lot of room for us to play and pass the ball. We won’t know how it’s going to work until we start practicing together in Florida this winter.
SOME PEOPLE SAY OTHER TEAMS MAY NOT WANT TO COMPETE AGAINST A TEAM THAT HAS YOU AND FACUNDO BECAUSE THEY KNOW THEY CAN’T WIN.
That's not true—and if it's true, we'll take the tournament. My job is to make the best team I can for Valiente, for Bob, and that's what I'm trying to do. It doesn't mean we're going to win playing together. We can lose. I always try to make the best team we can, and Facundo was free. If another team wanted him, they should have invited him.
