Coca-Cola outscored Bud Light 8-5 to win the eighth annual Goose Creek Cup, which took place July 30 at Flying H Polo Club in Big Horn, Wyoming. Coca-Cola started a familiar lineup with Gillian Johnston, Julio Arellano, Miguel Astrada and Carlucho Arellano facing off with Bud Light, made up of Santi Torres, Sugar Erskine, Hector Galindo and Jeff Blake.
Julio Arellano was the high-scoring player with six goals, which was enough to secure him MVP honors. Best Playing Pony went to Mario, played by Miguel Astrada and owned by G String Polo Ponies.
It was a triumphant moment for Erskine, who is returning to playing after suffering serious injury in a polo accident in fall 2016. Always a colorful crowd favorite, Julio Arellano, who has played with Erskine for many years, is happy to see him back in the saddle.
"We are definitely looking forward to playing with Sugar again. We hope he comes back from his accident well healed up; he's making good progress this summer," Arellano said. "I got to play with my brother and Gillian, which made it twice as fun. It was a lot of fun and it's for a great cause, so it's a win-win for everybody."
The 24-goal match was a fundraiser for the Downtown Sheridan Association and their mission to enhance, preserve, and promote downtown Sheridan, including their ongoing efforts to support stream restoration in Sheridan.
